John Zorn: Improvisations (New York)
by Cyro Baptista, Trevor Dunn, Ikue, Mori, Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Kenny Wolleson, and John Zorn (New York)
John Zorn’s vaunted critical reputation is based primarily on his work as a composer, bandleader, and all-around auteur of the myriad projects that comprise his oeuvre. However, it is crucial to recognize how collective improvisation – inspired by American models in jazz and experimental music as well as European streams of free improvisation – is at the core of his musical background.
In his first seminal compositions, Zorn sought to harness the idiosyncratic improvisatory vocabulary of his key collaborators within a dynamic and structured context. Naturally, his collaborators – then and now – are all accomplished and provocative improvisers; this special presentation, featuring members of the Electric Masada band in small-group collective improvisations, will be a showcase for the fertile imaginations that have helped to shape John Zorn’s musical output over the years. We hope, too, to hear plenty of his highly appealing saxophone playing!
