Sangam: Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussain, Eric Harland (USA)
Charles Lloyd, saxophones and other winds, established himself in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a key voice in the modern jazz developments known as hard bop. By the late 1960s, however, he had fully synthesized various influences from free jazz, rock music, and traditions from other parts of the world into a more expansive musical vision.
His tenor saxophone tone is readily compared to John Coltrane's, though it possesses a lightness that lends itself well to a context like Sangam. Here, Lloyd works with the remarkable tabla player Zakir Hussain who came to prominence in a jazz milieu for his collaborations with John McLaughlin, but who is internationally celebrated for his masterful contributions to the field of Indian classical music.
Joining them is drummer Eric Harland, who has contributed his consummate drum skills to groups with Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, and Wynton Marsalis, to name but a few. Sangam's self-titled CD, documenting a live set from 2004 in tribute to long-time Lloyd colleague Billy Higgins, is released on ECM Records.
