KidsAbility Youth Ensemble with Richard Burrows and Joe Sorbara (Guelph / Toronto)

Few performances have moved Guelph audiences like the opening to the 2012 performance by piano master Abdullah Ibrahim, when the KidsAbility Youth Ensemble marched onstage at the Riverrun Centre, singing one of the South African jazz great’s own compositions. For over half a century, KidsAbilityhas been empowering children and youth with a wide range of complex special needs to realize their full potential. This year, their performance will be helmed by two master percussionists. Richard Burrows, who has toured the world and gives masterclasses on improvisation, concert percussion and drumline across Canada, and Joe Sorbara, well-known in Guelph as the leader of the university’s Creative Music Ensemble (CME), a highly inventive drummer and percussionist with a penchant for coaxing music out of practically anything.
