Chicago Underground Duo (Chicago)

A duo explosion of musical energy! The Chicago Underground Duo is part of the game-changing generation of improvisers who emerged in Chicago’s music scene in the 1990s. Made up of cornetist Rob Mazurek (last heard in Guelph with Pharoah and the Undergrounds, featuring Pharoah Sanders) and drummer Chad Taylor (Marc Ribot, Iron and Wine), the duo cover the vast musical territories between familiar forms and far-reaching improvisations. On Record Store Day 2016, their LP Boca Negra (recorded in Sao Paulo, Brazil) was reissued on vinyl, giving new listeners the chance to hear this classic recording’s powerful grooves, ambient sound structures, folk song simplicity and bursts of polyrhythmic energy, as well as their unique cover of Ornette Coleman’s “Broken Shadows.”
