Venue: Goldschmidt Room, #107 MacKinnon Building, University of Guelph

“There is a young Cuban pianist named David Virelles, whom I consider a genius,” says Chucho Valdés. Born in Cuba to a musical family, Virelles began piano at the age of seven. When the Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnett heard him play, she invited him to Canada, beginning a musical odyssey that has taken David Virelles around the world. In 2015, the Downbeat Critics Poll named him #1 Rising Star in the Piano category. Now based in Brooklyn, Virelles has performed or recorded with Ravi Coltrane, Henry Threadgill, Wadada Leo Smith, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Steve Coleman, and Andrew Cyrille. When you hear his unique solo concert, you’ll know why The Guardian claims, “Virelles looks set to make big differences in contemporary music for years to come.”
