A Christmas treat from GJF and CBC Radio 2

1. Three GJF shows available online
2. Pianist David Virelles wins jazz award
3. Help us create 'Green Jazz' in 2009
4. Reminder: last chance to give to GJF in 2008

We didn't want to miss the chance to wish all our members, supporters, volunteers and artists an excellent holiday season, and a musical New Year. There's a little holiday treat for you below - three concerts from the 2008 Festival, streamed live off the web.

1. Three GJF shows available online

We've been notifying you about CBC airtime broadcasts from the 2008 Guelph Jazz Festival, but now we've got an easier way to listen - straight off the Radio 2 website's "Concerts on Demand" service. Go to one of these direct concert links, then click "play all tracks." You'll be listening to excellent quality, 2008 Guelph jazz in no time!

Not a bad little service, eh? The concerts will stay posted at the COD site for about a year. Our thanks to CBC Radio 2 for recording and posting these concerts.

2. Pianist David Virelles wins jazz award

Composer and pianist David Virelles won the Louis Appelbaum Composers Award last month - a $10,000 prize that recognizes excellence in a body of work by an emerging Canadian artist in the field of jazz composition.

Virelles played at the 2008 Guelph Jazz Festival, as part of Jane Bunnett's band, and GJF Artistic Director Ajay Heble was on the jury that picked Virelles for the award. Born and raised in Santiago de Cuba to a musical family, Virelles started to play the piano at the age of seven and began composing at age 13. Based in Toronto since 2001, 25-year-old Virelles studied at the University of Toronto and at Humber College, where he won the first Oscar Peterson Award.

3. Help us create 'Green Jazz' in 2009

We want to "green" the Guelph Jazz Festival in 2009 - fewer disposable items at our outdoor jazz tent, for example. Can you help us with some volunteer ideas and time? We need interested people to serve on our Green Jazz committee. Contact Executive Director Derek Andrews (519-763-4952) if you're interested.

4. Reminder: last chance to give to GJF in 2008

Our email appeal for financial donations two weeks ago prompted some response, but not as much as we'd hoped! If you're a Festival supporter, and didn't contribute to our summer mail-out appeal, and would like to donate and receive a tax receipt for 2008, please do so now! It will take only a minute or two online, through the secure paypal link on our website, right here.

Thanks! And all the best to you this season.
