Spotlight on Ryan Price: Jazz Art Auction artist
Artist Ryan Price explores our 'wonderful strangeness'
Ryan Price of Guelph is one of 45 talented local artists who are featured in this year's Sounds Provocative Jazz Art Auction, which hits the ebar on Sunday, April 19. "The Guelph Jazz Festival is a part of the community, and it's one of the reasons I stayed in Guelph," says Price. "I like it when artists get involved in putting together something important and they're doing it by themselves."
A graduate of London's Beal Art program, Price began his career as an artist in 1993, having numerous solo exhibitions throughout Ontario and winning awards for both printmaking and illustration. Currently the manager of Catch-23 (an art gallery and studio) in downtown Guelph, Price is known for a style that is "unmistakably human, with all the wonderful strangeness that entails."
"Some people see the dark side, other people see the humourous side," Price says about his work. "I just think that as people we're really strange, and I have fun exploring that."
While some may want to know more about the subjects in his pieces, Price prefers not to elaborate. "I've always thought of art as an interaction between two people - the artist who made the piece and the viewer who looks at it. I don't like getting in between."
