Two exciting jazz concerts in May‏

1. Jazz Art Auction thanks
2. Concert: Ajay Heble and friends - Friday, May 8, Toronto
3. Concert - Jesse Stewart - Friday, May 22, Guelph

Spring is here with a bang for us. Our first honour was being one of six finalists for "Jazz Festival of the Year" from the 2009 National Jazz Awards (you can still vote here). Next was our incredibly successful Jazz Art Auction, two weeks ago. And to top it off, we can tell you about two wonderful jazz concerts to get you in the mood for our upcoming Festival, Sept. 5-9, 2009.

1. Jazz Art Auction thanks

Once again, our Jazz Art Auction was a huge success, and once again, we have you to thank. This year's Auction raised a record $20,680, with funds going to support this year's Festival. To all the artists who contributed, the silent auction donors, and to the volunteers who made it run smoothly, we offer our heartfelt thanks. Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous donations of our sponsors: The Bookshelf, Wellington Brewery, Inbox Marketer, The Alma Gallery and Catch-22 Framing. Bravo!

2. Concert: Ajay Heble and friends - Friday, May 8, Toronto

The first of two great spring concerts features Ajay Heble (the festival's Artistic Director) on piano, alongside Daniel Fischlin on guitars, Lewis Melville on bass and Rob Wallance on drums. When asked to describe where the quartet is stylistically, Heble says, "Our music is totally improvised, and thus changes from session to session. We're sounding a bit like a mix between The Necks (an improvising ensemble from Australia) and German rock music from the '70s, with nods to free jazz and Indian ragas."

3. Concert - Jesse Stewart - Friday, May 22, Guelph

GJF alumnus and friend, Jesse Stewart, is appearing in Guelph later this month. Now teaching composition at Carleton University in Ottawa, Stewart has a varied resume as a composer, percussionist, visual artist, instrument builder and writer. Long regarded as one of the top percussionists in the country, Stewart has been known to make music out of tools as varied as a stone, a canoe paddle, steel bowls and saw blades. Listen to him, then come see him live.
