Steve Swell’s Soul Travelers (USA)

Steve Swell's Soul Travelers

Trombonist Steve Swell is one of the foremost exponents of his instrument today, as he ranges from deftly articulated bebop phrasing to the raucous, vocalized expressionism of his mentor, the late great Roswell Rudd. Swell’s Soul Travelers play a pulsating and energetic free music with soul very much as its engine. Alto saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc’s gloriously unfettered phrasing has the same blues rootedness as Ornette Coleman’s, but in an even more richly vocalized style. Pianist Dave Burrell is an understated master of framing open improvisations with intelligence, rhythmic subtlety, and grace, and as a soloist he revels in the play between careful construction and outward expression. The crack tandem of two long-time friends of the Guelph Jazz Festival, drummer Chad Taylor and double-bassist William Parker will further ensure that Steve Swell’s Soul Travelers travel soulfully, swingingly, and joyfully.

Friday, 14 September, 8pm, Cooperators Hall, River Run Centre (on a bill with Fernández/Charuest), $30/$25
