A Note from the Artistic Director

(This note is a version of what is printed in the 2018 print program.)

Assembling a program of wide-ranging, world-class music is the fun part of the job. The artists and groups described [on this site] excite me enormously, and the varied approaches they reflect amount to a dynamic long weekend of uncommon creative music. This 25th Anniversary program is a celebration, as we continue the work of my predecessor, the founding Artistic Director, Ajay Heble.

The real work, of course, goes on in the background by a dedicated team. In particular, the festival runs on the energy of volunteers who staff box offices, drive vans, serve on the Board, and so much more. A big ‘thank you’ – we could not do it without them. My gratitude, too, goes to our fantastic staff: Marshall Angus, Alex Ricci, Jordan Delfs, Carey West, Angela Bossence, Jenny Jayaval, Helen Dmitrijevic, Gwyn Peters, Ari Zimmerman, and Shayne Ward. It has been a pleasure to work with them all.

Finally, our irreplaceable Director of Operations, Julie Hastings, deserves special accolades. She has been with the festival practically since its inception, and oversees virtually all aspects with skill, focus, and enthusiasm. So, it is bittersweet that this festival will be Julie’s last, as she announces her well-deserved retirement. In the spirit of gratitude and celebration, I dedicate the 25th Anniversary Guelph Jazz Festival to her.
