Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey have collaborated together and separately with countless luminaries across the global field of creative music. They also have a thoroughly refined duo music on three wonderful recordings, most recently Utter (Relative Pitch 2018), a poised, patient, and hugely articulate set of instant compositions. They added legendary cellist Hank Roberts, who came to prominence in the 1980s on JMT label recordings by, among others, Bill Frisell and Tim Berne, for a one-off gig in New York in July 2018. The trio’s combined lyricism, rhythmic acumen, and inventiveness made for a concert that both Ingrid and GJF new co-programmer Karen Ng – who was lucky to be in attendance – describe as ‘magical.’ We are delighted to bring the magic to Guelph.
