A fateful encounter at the Guelph venue, Silence, put Toronto composer, vocalist, and trumpeter Rebecca Hennessy in contact with renowned Guelph author, essayist, photographer, and screenwriter Thomas King. In Hennessy’s singular songwriting and performance with her band Makeshift Island (with Kevin Breit, Dave Clark, Michael Herring, and Tania Gill), King surely heard the rich potential of lifting his words off the page into song. This project is the result, a suite of warm-hearted songs that are, by turns, poignant, funny, playful, bittersweet, and hopeful –– a fitting musical tribute to a Canadian literary treasure.
