The Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble has been a key incubator for young musical talent in the city for many years. Founded by local musician and educator Brent Rowan, and now led by his colleague Tyler Wagler, the program has made its mark at the GJF with collaborations with notable visiting artists Marianne Trudel (2019), Joe Sorbara (2018), Christine Duncan and Jean Martin (2017), and many more. When COVID hit in 2020, the ensemble persevered through the various restrictions, rehearsing in person when possible and through online means as necessary. The experience of working together was a balm through challenging times, both for the ensemble members, their families and Tyler as Musical Director. This incarnation of the band lasted until September of 2022 when they aged out of the ensemble and played their last gigs at the Guelph Jazz Festival. It took some time to recruit new members but starting in early 2024 a new version of the ensemble was born. This will be the first time performing at the festival for all of the new members.
The current members of the ensemble are:
David Ferreira – Alto Sax
Sullivan Falls – Piano
Atom Grimes – Guitar
Amshu Bhat – Drums
