This project pairs kindred spirits across the disciplines of improvised music and dance: alto saxophonist Yves Charuest and dancer Alanna Kraaijeveld, both from Montreal. Charuest, who first came to Guelph in 2018 to present his exceptional duo with Catalan pianist Agustí Fernández, works saxophonic material with a rigour and intensity that evokes Steve Lacy or Evan Parker, by turns, but within a thoroughly individual musical aesthetic. Alanna Kraaijeveld is a perfect kinetic foil, complementing and contrasting Charuest’s deep rhythmic investigations with athleticism and imagination in equal measure.
