New Hermitage (NS)

This collective quartet from Halifax plays freely improvised music with an internal logic and coherence that bespeaks their many years working together. New Hermitage is Andrew MacKelvie (woodwinds), India Galley (cello), Ellen Gibling (harp), and Ross Burns (guitar), featuring instrumentation that rightly suggests the descriptor, ‘chamber improvisation.’ It is a combination that foregrounds the blending and superimposition of rich acoustic textures, the judicious use of space, and a keen awareness of group purpose forged through focused listening and craft. It is a hyperlocal vernacular music that radiates outward with the vision and dedication of its protagonists.
